The Problem With Plastic
Everyone knows that plastic is an amazing substance. It is lightweight, cheap, and durable. The problem is that it has become so ubiquitous that it is a menace in many ways. It does not biodegrade so it hangs around in the environment for hundreds of years. In fact, all the plastic ever made is still around in some form (unless it was burned or blown up). More and more manufacturers are packaging their products in plastic rather that glass or aluminum. You may have noticed that your plastic recycling bin accumulates trash much faster than the other bins. Only 1 or 2 percent of plastic gets recycled. What happens to the rest? It is littering our environment. Some gets into our rivers after a rain and from there it can make its way to the ocean.

Once it gets to the ocean, it is stuck circulating in the currents. It causes harm to thousands of ocean organisms. It litters our roadways and land. In packaging, it can leach harmful chemicals and negatively affect our health. Plastic needs to be used wisely and we consumers need to reduce the amount we buy.

10 Ways to Reduce Disposable Plastic From Your Life
  1. Use reusable shopping bags.
  2.  Avoid single-use plastic bottles. Carry your own water bottle.
  3.  Make your own spreadable butter and put it in a glass dish.
  4.  Dine out at restaurants that do not generate plastic waste.
  5.  Take snacks and meals on trips or to work (in resuable containers, of course).
  6.  Take your own coffee mug to the coffee shop or to work.
  7.  Use string or mesh bags for produce, avoiding plastic produce bags.
  8.  Make your own yogurt.
  9.  Use bar soap instead of liquid soap in a plastic bottle.
  10. Be a conscious consumer. Do not get pulled in by clever marketing.
